Sister March Chicago - 2020
On Saturday, January 20, 2020 - The BM Community Media Team was live @ the 2ND Annual Sister March - a Community-Building Event, brought to you by The Women of the 7TH Congressional District. Community members gathered at the 345 Art Gallery on 345 N Kedzie, for another information packed “Women Rising” event… focused on #thewomenswave, “womensrights, “womenshealth, #solidarity, and #love.
Among those in attendance were: State Representative - LaShawn K. Ford, Commissioner - Brandon Johnson, Congressman - Danny K. Davis, City Treasurer - Melissa Conyers-Ervin, and Illinois Supreme Court Judge, P. Scott Neville, Jr.
One tell tale sign of a successful “Community-Building” event, is the exchange of valuable information - of which there was no shortage. Organizational Leaders were on hand to speak about and share information on The 2020 Census, Women’s Health, and the growing effects of mental health on the black community, etc…
Speaker Tandra Rutledge, offered a gentle reminder that you don’t need special training to have an open, authentic conversation about mental health – and often, just talking about it can be the first important step in understanding where someone is with their mental health, and helping them get support or treatment if needed.
She also shared some quick pointers we can all use when having a #RealConvo with the people in your life… the link to which can be found here.
When all was said and done… we caught up with one of the organizers - Crystal Gardner - to discuss the fruits of the day… and have her share here vision for tomorrow, as the #thewomenswave continues.
Ms Gardner said that she felt that the event went amazingly… and that she especially enjoyed the high spirit of sisterhood and solidarity that filled the room. Moreover, she really appreciated hearing the speakers echo the importance of The Sister March - for women in general, but especially on the west side… and the importance of speaking on issues that effect women everywhere, but especially on the west side.
The overall sentiment was that there can never be enough informed and targeted conversations for black and brown people, and that the hopes for tomorrow is that more partners and sponsors will come alongside initiatives like The Sister March - to help grow and maximize the impact of a Community-Building effort, that is already bearing good fruit.

On Saturday, December 7th, 2019 - nbmg was on the job @ The Chicago Nurses In Aids Care Gala - as they celebrated 30 years of servicing an often forgotten community.

On Friday, November 29th, 2019 - nbmg was on the job @ The 13TH Positive 2ND Annual Fundraiser & Gala - as they took another step in their commitment to giving back to the community that gave so much to them.
Community Conversation With Senator Durbin
On Wednesday, August 7th, 2019 - nbmg was on the job @ The Lightford Community Center in Maywood - for a town hall community conversation with Senator Dick Durbin. The Proviso Partners for Health brought the community together, so that those in attendance would able to lend their voice to the plans for addressing community wide needs.
North Lawndale Employment Network: Groundbreaking
On Thursday, July 18th, 2019 - nbmg was on the job @ The North Lawndale Employment Network - for the ground breaking ceremony of their new, state of the art, facility. Community members gathered to witness the ribbon cutting of this long overdue community edifice.
Huddling-Up For Autism Awareness Month: With The Shellcross Family
Meet Noel Shellcross, wife and mother of two, and grandmother of Molly Marcella - who is living with Autism. Autism awareness month has been thirty days of awakening for our family. The word AUTISM speaks for our special ones on the spectrum. AUTISM is very special and unique just like every soul born. For myself AUTISM spells A for awesome, U for unique, T for transcendental, I for introspection, S for spiritual and M for mystical. Autism Awareness Month gives my son and I the opportunity to celebrate his identity with no judgement… only pride. It is beautiful to see the world come together and learn about the struggles and blessings of the spectrum.
It’s important to let the world know that Autism is not something to be ashamed of, or something to keep quiet about… it’s a gift that allows us to see the broad varieties of the human race, and it teaches us to cherish it.

This month is very important to me, not just because I am a woman, but I'm a mom with a daughter that I know is looking up to me... as I looked up to my own mother.
My mother loved cooking, catering, and she had a great eye for design. I watched her every move and now I am the owner of A Social Life, a party planning and event design company. She shaped me, as I am now shaping my daughter. We are all reflections. I'm curious to see what type of reflection she will cast.
I would like to thank Erika and Sorah again, for taking the time to be a part of my Community Building Tour, as well Mrs Elle Davis and The Ellevate Group for bringing these lovely ladies into my world. Meet Supermom Terrand Smith and her little Supergirl - Yael… whom i was blessed to have be a part of The Women’s History Stop on THE b3GOOD TOUR. After the shoot, i asked Terran why International Women’s History Month was important to her… and here is what she had to say.
Habakkuk 2:3
“For the vision is yet for the appointed time; It hastens toward the goal and it will not fail. Though it tarries, wait for it; For it will certainly come, it will not delay.”
I have become even more driven by this scripture as I’ve grown as a woman, a single mother and as an entrepreneur.
The vision I have does not stop at Terrand. I’ve learned each day, to plant seeds, and continuously water them. You don’t eat the fruit the same day you plant the seed. It takes time and seasons.
So yes, there will be some fruit I eat while I’m on this earth. There will also be fruit my daughter (and her generation) eats from the seeds I’ve planted.
Although my parents, grandparents and ancestors paved the way for me to have a post graduate degree, worked at Fortune 50 companies and traveled the world, there is still so much more that is needed for women, especially black women, to get the respect and access that is ours. And unfortunately, it won’t be given to us.
Black Women Make 63 Cents For Every Dollar Paid To White Men
Black Women Make $21,698 Less Per Year On Average Than White Male Peers
Black Women Must Work 219 Days Into 2018 To Achieve Equal Pay
We, as a group, have not yet “made it”. With each generation, we get better, we get stronger, we get further, but that’s only because of those that came before us and pushed for our progress- despite what boxes they were put in or what obstacles they faced. There is nothing simple or easy about doing this, but “Though it tarries, wait for it; For it will certainly come, it will not delay.”
One of my favorite stories to tell is when I was picking up my daughter, Yael, from school and was running late. One of her teachers said “Maybe your mom is late because her boss had her do more work” . Yael said “My mommy IS the boss” .
That made me feel amazing, because without her even knowing it, I have planted a seed that she was watering with her words. That it is not only an option for her to own, create and lead, but it’s in her destiny.
I work hard at 37 Oaks Consulting. It’s not just my business , but it’s my seed.

Women’s History Month is important to me because it allows me to be intentional with focusing on what type of woman, mom, wife , daughter and friend I want to represent for my daughter. A woman who is passionate, fearless, purposeful, compassionate and loving. Living life to its fullest to realize all of my blessings both seen and unseen.

When I think about Women's History Month, I first think of the accomplishments of all the amazing women around me, currently. I think of how they are defining their own stories and living life with intention and purpose.
And, when I think about that, I want the same for my daughter. As a parent, I have to challenge myself daily not to limit her creativity because she is in the process of developing her story.
I don't know if she or I will be in the history books, known world-wide, for any of our work. I do know that we both must look in the mirror each day happy and filled with gratitude of the people we are.
And, I hope that means a life filled with service, kindness and a moral compass.

When I think about Women's History Month, the word Legacy comes to mind.
When I was 5 months pregnant, my husband passed away suddenly. Immediately I was faced with the opportunity to fear or to have faith. Knowing that I was carrying our son, failure was not an option. I realized that I carried a promise, I carried purpose.
As a new mother, i am reminded every day of my responsibility to create and keep an environment that nourishes both of our physical and spiritual well-being. Remembering that I am a woman of many mothers, i pull on the knowledge, time, and love these women have poured into me.
